Operative Procedures
Combination procedures:
- Roux-En-Y Bypass
- Mini Gastric Bypass
- Biliopancreatic Diversion
All produce much more impressive weight loss and diabetes resolution rates than their restrictive counterparts.
Rates of over 90% have been cited for the procedures in the literature.
A recent paper in Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery reported a resolution of diabetes in 98% of obese patients following the Mini Gastric Bypass procedure.
Equally impressive statistics have been cited for the other procedures.
However, at the expense of technically more demanding operations.
A strong determinant in choosing a procedure much be the following considerations:
- Complication rate
- Ease of revision
- Ease of reversal
If the results are equal, then the logical choice would be the operation with the least complications and the potential for revision or reversal if required.
