Operative Procedures

Restrictive procedures:

All produce weight loss of modest proportions and consequently modest resolution rates for diabetes. The weight loss eminates from enforced dietary restriction (i.e. hunger remains). The patient feels uncomfortably full after small meals and reduces intake to avoid this unpleasant sensation.

The procedure may be "cheated" by consuming small amounts of calorie dense foodstuffs. Frequently eating small amounts of liquidised food and high calorie drinks is enough to maintain or even gain weight inspite of the procedure.

There is a high rate of failure for the gastric band procedure.
This is as high as 40% within 5 years.
A recent paper in Surgery for Obesity Related Diseases cited that band removal would predictably hit 100% within 10 years of placement.

Fortunately, band removal is a relatively simple procedure.
