Roux-en-Y Bypass
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a variation on the traditional procedure performed for gastric cancer.
It is modified for gastric bypass surgery by virtue of leaving the bottom portion of the stomach within the patient.
Instead of a loop of bowel being used to restore continuity, the bowel is divided to produce a "Y".
The food enters a substantially smaller stomach and bypasses the first part of the small bowel.
Weight loss and reversal of diabetes is the result of the new pathway taken by food.
