Operative Procedures

Gastric bypass operations:

The common bypass procedures are based upon the operation described by Bilroth for the treatment gastric cancer.

Two variations of the procedure exist in surgical practice

Bilroth II gastrectomyRoux-En-Y gastrectomy

These procedures are shown below:

The upper diagram illustrates the Bilroth II gastrectomy.
The continuity of the bowel is restored with a loop of small bowel

 

 

The lower diagram illustrates the Roux-En-Y gastrectomy.
The continuity of the bowel is restored with a piece of divided small bowel

 

 

The difference between the gastric bypass procedure and the operations shown above is that the lower part of the stomach is excised in cancer surgery, and left in situ for gastric bypass surgery.
